For the last few years Supporters Direct have worked with the RFL to offer a fan based award that recognises the often unappreciated dedication that many supporters demonstrate day in, day out. This award is made as part of the Championship/ League 1 awards evening.
The 2018 winner of the Supporters Direct Community Champion Award was Ben Moorhouse.
Ben lives and breathes The Steve Prescott Foundation.
Over the last four years Ben has taken it upon himself to continue Steve Prescott’s legacy by fundraising by undertaking a series of Extreme Challenge Walks, each year increasing the difficulty of the challenge.
This year Ben risked everything to raise the funds which support The Benevolent Fund of the Rugby League via The Steve Prescott Foundation by completing his 150 mile walk of the island of Rhodes in only 45 hours in the most extreme conditions possible, becoming the first person to complete the walk in under 48 hours.
This year saw Ben raise over £3600 and over the four years he has raised an impressive £11300.
Ben works full time and in every spare moment he’s dedicating his time and energy to positive work using the vehicle of Rugby League. Through his brilliant promotional work and gaining much celebrity support Ben has raised awareness to thousands of the SPF both here in the UK and overseas.
Just like Steve Prescott, Ben simply wants to help others by raising money and awareness which is so worthwhile.
A lifelong Bradford Bulls fan, Ben is the ideal role model for many people who are going through hard times. Selfless, dedicated and humble were some of the reoccurring words from the overwhelming amount of nominations we received for Ben from all over the Rugby League family.
Ben is a true unsung hero who deserves a little something for what he has done for so many people and we are proud to name him the SD Rugby League Community Champion for 2018.
